Thu, March 20, 2008 - 11:30 AMWell, maybe you don't know but from your birth details it seems so in my program : lagna in Sagittarius/Dhanus in P.Shada Nakshatra with Moon in lagna.
Moon for Sag is the lord of malefic 8th house - even though the Moon is a natual benefic, in your case it's a functional malefic also.
So wearing the Moon's gem (s) is only going to increase its effects, i.e the 8th house effects mostly. Especially during Moon Mahadasha all the potentials represented by your 8th house Moon are going to be activated. The best would be to neutralize the effects/tone them down ! So I advise again wearing gems.
BUT you need indeed to help/strengthen your Moon. There are other means to do so: through meditation or contemplation; try to live in calm surroundings with peaceful music. Spend time near the water (lake, sea, river). Wear the colour white. Moon’s food is white rice. Moon’s day is Monday. Charity in relation to the Moon: give to environmental groups, organizations that help women or girls. Mantra for Moon is: AUM SOMAYA NAMAHA
Activities that activate the Moon’s energy to appease/honour the Moon: relax in a warm bath, meditate, generally relax, examine your feelings and motives for some of your actions, spend time near water, look at photos from your youth, show and share your feelings with other people, do activities which nurture you, pay attention to the Moon phases (like New Moon, Full Moon and so on), be nice to women, nurture your plants, care for someone, make a meal.
Best time to start performing a new activity is on the new Moon !
Unsu...Thu, March 20, 2008 - 11:44 AMAttikka,
Parasara states that the Sun & Moon are never evil as the 8th lord, so for Sagittarius and Capricorn ascendants, the 8th lord is not actually evil. Although the 8th lord will always indicate 8th house things. I guess maybe Sagittarius and Capricorn are the two signs that can handle the stresses of the 8th house.
Just one of those funny exceptions!
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:10 PMHm.... I may have my own opinion about it; I'm Sagittarius :)
I have not read Parasara but from many teachings and experiences I do feel that the 8th house lord is the 8th house lord.... to various extents.
In my opinion there would be good and bad effects - a bit like with Saturn for Gemini rising, lord of 8th and 9th and malefic planet by nature.
Moon is a benefic planet by nature but with a certain agenda in this case.
The blessing for Sag rising is that Moon is a fast moving planet and its effects are mostly short-lived.
Do you know of System of Approach ?
Unsu...Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:56 PMNo, what is System of Approach?
I agree, the 8th lord is always the 8th lord. However, Parasara first states that the neutral houses are 2nd, 8th, & 12th. That is, the 8th lord is only evil or good based on its association with another house. But then he goes on to say that the 8th is the 12th from the 9th, so when the 8th lord is bad it's really bad. The really evil house lords are the lords of the 3rd, 6th, & 11th, according to Parasara. And he says specifically, "No blemish of the 8th lordship is caused the Sun & Moon." So he gives these general rules, and then after that he lists the good and evil planets for each Lagna. The Moon comes out neutral for Sagittarius.
From your personal experience, how is that you experience the Moon as difficult for Sagittarius?
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 3:13 PMHi David,
1) System of Approach is a branch of Jyotish founded by V.K Choudhry in India.
It basically gives a lot of importance to Moolatrikonas and degrees.
For each sign, and for each house, the significator would depend on the existence or not of a moolatrikona.
For example, for Sagittarius rising, the lagna ruler is Jupiter because Sagittarius is Moolatrikona sign of Jupiter so it would become first significator for matters relating to the 1st house. Whereas for Pisces rising, Jupiter for the reasons just explained, cannot be 1st significator, so the 2nd significator, the Sun, in this case would become first significator and would be considered as ruler (Jupiter would become second significator) on so on for each house.
Then there is the MEP: the most effective point, which is the exact degree the ascendant is in, and consequently the most effective point of every house in the chart.
Then there is the MMP: most malefic planet and MBP: most benefic planet. To take for example the MMP it’s the 8th or the 12th or the 6th lord – for a Sagittrius rising, it is the 8th since the 8th is in Cancer Moolatrikona for Moon; but for other ascendants it’d be a different lord accordingly.
If no Moolatrikona is in 6th, 8th or 12th house then these lords are not malefic – like for a Gemini rising, which in this system is the most “lucky” sign for that respect.
Rahu and Ketu are always malefic for all lagnas.
If the MMP influences the MEP of a house (within a 5 degree orb) that’s when it gets serious affliction-wise, otherwise it can be quite trouble free.
With this method often feared Sade Sati for example may not be of any consequence to some lagnas. It’s quite a straightforward approach. My teacher Roeland de Looff said he was dubious when this system first came out, but once using it he had more accurate results with it than any other. Myself, I’m learning every kind of approach there is until I’ll be able to decide which suits me best.
If you want to read about it:
Choudhry's website is: www.yournetastrologer.com/
And in the US: www.iipa.net/ and www.astroview.com/e_system.html
2) Moon as 8th lord
In my case frankly it’s difficult to extract the Moon from other considerations – my Moon is with Rahu and the depositor Saturn is DB.
But what I’m thinking is that for all Sag, Moon is lord of 8th – and Sagittarius is half-beast, half man, the stage of transformation, the path of self-discovery. So in that respect having an 8th lord for the mind is very fitting for Sagittarius: the 8th lord brings difficulties and transformations.
To talk about the 8th lord effect on me: my 8th lord is in the 3rd house so that I’m really to undergo many transformations on a psychological level, which is very true. In the house of younger siblings, I don’t have any. My self-confidence is challenged also. I don’t care much for relationships with co-workers. My immediate environment changes frequently. I’m partly secretive.
Unsu...Sun, March 23, 2008 - 4:35 PMAttikka,
Thanks so much for sharing your personal experience.
Regarding SOA, basically it gives more importance to the mulatrikona signs and their lords than the other signs and planets? It sounds very interesting, and worthy of further study. An technique that gives accurate results is worth looking into.
My teacher Ernst asserts that Sagittarius is not a centaur, which is primarily a Western concept, but an archer on a horse. His reasoning has to do with the feet of the signs. Are you familiar with this way of categorizing the signs that comes from Parasara? It is based on the symbol for the sign. There are one-footed signs (Pisces, 2nd half of Capricorn), two-footed signs (all the human ones - Gemini, Virgo, Libra, & Aquarius), four-footed signs (Aries, Taurus, Leo, 1st half of Cap), and many-footed or insect signs (Cancer & Scorpio).
Sagittarius is said to be two-footed in the first half and four-footed in the second half. This would be a man (two-footed) on a horse (four-footed), rather than a centaur. But yeah, I guess that would still be half-man, half-beast, wouldn't it? Anyway, just thought I'd share that tidbit in case it was news to anyone.
Capricorn is the other interesting one. The symbol is a crocodile, which is four-footed in the front, and one-footed (tail used for swimming) in the back.
It is my understanding of Sagittarius that they don't mind change so much, and that's why the 8th house is not so negative.
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 3:38 AMHi David,
"Thanks so much for sharing your personal experience. "
"Regarding SOA, basically it gives more importance to the mulatrikona signs and their lords than the other signs and planets? "
Yes exactly, you got the gist of it.
It is a very interesting method, i think. I'm willing to spend time exploring it more deeply.
Interestingly enough in France where Vedic is by no means big, the only few books one may find are about System of Approach. Since Western Astrology is widely spread there, I think this system is a nice bridge into the Vedic sciences, giving importance to the orb/aspect by degree which seems very mathematical and more tangible to Western astrologers to begin with.
Ah yes, the concept of feet and appearance - learnt that with Sam. Very interesting indeed ! This concept does have a lot of wisdom.
"It is my understanding of Sagittarius that they don't mind change so much, and that's why the 8th house is not so negative. "
it's certainly one way to look at it - change is part of their journey. On the other hand, let's not forget that any change is painful. The churning of emotions start in Scorpio and continue in Sagittarius - or the conflict between lower and higher impulses.
Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 6:26 PMI totally agree and 2nd parasara's teaching on the lord of 8th house.
I am capricorn lagna and in my experience, Sun(my 8th lord) has not been bad to me.
Again it is important to see the placement/ strength and association of the 8th house lord and the planets placed in it.
For e.g. in my case, the lord of 8th or sun is placed in 9th house at about 2 degrees. My 9th house lord Mercury is placed in the 9th also at about 27 degrees and virgottam in navamsa. Most effective point of 9th is around 18 degrees and so the effect of Mercury is more than effect of sun on 9th. However lets say in my case sun was around 20 degrees and mercury about 2 degrees, then it would have been really bad as sun gains more power and control regarding the manifestations of the 9th house.
Also when a planet becomes the lord of a good and an evil house, its effect will be determined by its Moolatrikonna sign. Like in my case Mercury for capri ascendant is the lord of 6th and 9th but virgo is 9th which is mooltrikona sign of mercury and according to parasara, such a mercury will be a benefic
another eg...for cancer lagnas, Jupiter rules 6th and 9th. But here Jupiter Moolatrikona falls in 6th and so it has more bad than good effects!! inspite of being the lord of 9th house. However there is some grace as cancer is also jupiter's house of exaltation and so when cancer rises, jupiter in general becomes strong.
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 6:57 PM"Also when a planet becomes the lord of a good and an evil house, its effect will be determined by its Moolatrikonna sign. If this were the case then how would Mars relate to scorpio lagna? Since mars is the ruler of 1H and 6H for scorpio, would it mean that mars is a malefic to scorpio since its moolatrikona is aries, the 6H ruler...an evil house???
Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:05 PMThat is actually a good question. However if you study parasara, it says that the rule given is not true when lagnesh is involved.
The reason he gives is that Lagna is the only house which is in effect both a Kendra house and a Trikona place (as it is 9th from 5th and 5th from ninth and completes the trine triangle) and it completes the kendra sqaure too.
A planet that rules both trikona and a kendra is called a yoga karaka. Like venus for capri and aquarius lagnas and mars for leo or cancer lagnas.
So in the case that you have mentioned, mars is still a benefic even though it rules 6th in scorpio lagnas.
Similarly for aquarius lagnas, saturn is a benefic even though capri rules their 12th house.
Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:16 PMthanks for the clarification. I have purchased red coral to strengthen my mars in libra in the 12H, but have been cautious of the results of wearing such a gem since I am unsure whether or not I need to strengthen him due to the fact that he is in my 12H aspecting my 7H of partnerships. Plus I received very bad news right after I put the gem on, and since then have taken it off. I am still unsure that wearing the red coral is benefic...maybe it was a flawed piece. I don't like the idea of strengthening malefics.....I need to do more research.
Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:25 PM11th--gains and good news
12th--losses and bad news
by wearing a red coral, you will intensify the effects of 12th, 6th (aries) being the mooltrikona sign and again 6th coz of direct aspect of mars
6th can mean acute diseases, increase in enemies and 12th and 6th combined can give litigation and imprisonment.
Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:35 PM"6th can mean acute diseases, increase in enemies and 12th and 6th combined can give litigation and imprisonment."
This is something to think about since my bad news involves litigation, though not imprisonment. I don't know if it had to do with the wearing of the coral even though I received the bad news right after putting the gem on. The bad news was waiting for me an hour before I put the gem on, though I found out shortly afterwards. Hmmm....it is rather coincidental, and I'm sure there is some significance. I am very wary about the red coral even though I've been advised to wear it....alway go with your gut I say!
Unsu...Tue, April 8, 2008 - 9:02 PMHi Bhakti,
Parasara gives the general rules, and then he gives the specific subha (good) and paapa (evil) lords for each lagna, and there are excpetions to the general rules.
Mars is actually considered to be a neutral bhava lord for Scorpio, rather than a subha lord. So it does get taken down a notch as the 6th lord.
Another example of a lagnesh not being favorable to the chart is Venus is actually a paapa/evil graha for Taurus lagna! This is also a situation where the lagna lord is also the 6th lord, but I guess it is a worse condition for Taurus than it is for Scorpio, as Mars is only neutral for Scorpio while Venus is evil for Taurus.
Unsu...Wed, April 9, 2008 - 12:25 AMHi David,
Thanks for your response.
So then my question is since mars is a neutral planet for scorpio, would it matter the placement of this lagna lord? Does it bring about the positive or negative aspects of the planet since he's in the12H? Like does it affect scorpio's confidence?
Unsu...Wed, April 9, 2008 - 1:09 AM

This is interesting, the reason probably is that mars is better placed in the 6H, than venus is. How would that affect an Taurus lagna? Would venus have to be placed in a dusthana house to cancel out the evil effect of venus?
Unsu...Wed, April 9, 2008 - 5:32 AMBhakti,
The way I understand subha and paapa bhava lords is that the evil bhava lords tend to sway the person away from their destiny and life path, and work counter to the person's true nature. To strengthen the lagna, we want to strengthen and emphasize the characteristics of the subha bhava lords. Mars as a neutral for Scorpio will not hurt nor help the chart. But he is still the lord of the lagna and his placement in the 12th will be difficult, because it's lord of the 1st in the 12th. Regardless of subha or paapa, every graha is trying to promote its own houses and every graha is good for the house that it owns. It's just that paapa grahas are not good for the other houses or the chart as a whole.
That's my current understanding..
Unsu...Wed, April 9, 2008 - 6:22 AMDavid,
So there seems to be no way around that mars in the 12H for me. I have no problem with confidence, I speak to crowds of strangers every night for a living, and I have no problem standing up for myself in the most effective way. The problem is that I can't seem to get my creative work off the ground, I'm a late bloomer in that department. I was doing pretty well with creative pursuits until last December when I got the wind knocked out of me by a series of unfortunate events, and abusive persons.
I've been advised to wear garnet for the sun in order to compensate for the weak mars in 12H. I didn't understand this at first since my sun is very strong in scorpio in 1H, but I guess strengthening a strong planet could make things better all around. Garnet feels like the right choice.
Unsu...Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:55 AMHi Bhakti,
Where is Venus? If Venus is a temporary friend to Mars, then Mars will be in good dignity and its effects will be more positive. It can mean that you need more time alone and that you are somewhat removed from the world and not invested in worldly success. It can also pertain to expenses and long-term investments. If Mars is in good dignity, you are willing and able to invest in yourself, even if that means you don't see returns on your investment right away. For career success, you want to look at the dasamsa chart. And for any planet in the rasi you also want to look at navamsa position to see how you feel about that planet on an inner level. A good navamsa position can do a lot to improve the indications of the graha. And of course, everything is dasa dependent. That's what's nice about the dasas, is it teaches us that the only constant is change. So if you're in a bad period, all you have to do is wait and things will get better eventually.
Unsu...Wed, April 9, 2008 - 11:10 AMDavid,
"Where is Venus?"
Venus is in the 1H in scorpio with the sun and rahu. I have parivartana yoga with venus and mars.
"It can mean that you need more time alone and that you are somewhat removed from the world and not invested in worldly success."
This is most certainly true. I need time alone in order to decompress and feel sane. The world drains me even though when I'm out in it I give my all with pleasure and passion. But I need to retreat and sometimes not speak to others
"If Mars is in good dignity, you are willing and able to invest in yourself, even if that means you don't see returns on your investment right away."
This is most certainly true on so many levels. I will give you one example: I am an opera singer who has trained in my craft snce I was 12 years old...20 years or so. I have invested in this for so long and hope that the return is coming soon.
"For career success, you want to look at the dasamsa chart."
My dasamsa chart looks really good, much better than my navamsa (which has 2 fallen planets)
Dasamsa has Sun in moolatrikona, Exalted Jupiter, Venus in Moolatrikona, and Saturn in Moolatrikona....Virgo Lagna. hahah I only wish this was my rasi or navamsa chart!
Anyway, in the navamsa my venus and mercury are both debilitated....I don't feel good about the venus debilitation. Venus rules my 7H in rasi and is severely combust. I had asked before abou the parivartana yoga in another thread as I'm trying to figure out if the yoga helps both troubled planets.
Thanks for all your help David, you are very generous on this tribe I can see,
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:50 PM"Also when a planet becomes the lord of a good and an evil house, its effect will be determined by its Moolatrikonna sign."
This is not correct according to BPHS. This is a common opinion though, generally borne out of something that "sounds good'.
The same Chapter that has the rules about the Sun and moon not being malefic as 8th lords (Cap and sag ascendant) - quoted here - also has the detailed rules that you use to determine planets as house rulers,, (Yoga Karakas Chapter) it has nothing to do with the mulatrikona signs.
Mulatrikona signs are qualities that elevate THE PLANET - It has nothing to do with HOUSES.. This is especially off when you consider that the mulatrikona of the Moon is Taurus - The MT has nothing to do with house rulerships.. Just read the Chapter on rulerships and you'll see.
I have done extensive study on this particular Chapter and its importance. The results of this research was my first book
"The Ascendant - 108 Planets of Vedic Astrology"
This important CHapter is also the one with the rules about "benefics ruling angles cease to be benefic, etc." - and many others.
The reason this chapter, and the rules gets poo-pooed is because they are complicated and the "Mulatrikona,..." idea is simplistic. Unfortunately this idea has found its way into the books of many jyotishis who have not looked into it.
KN Rao, Dr. Charak, Ernst Wilhelm and several others other astrologers have also addressed this issue in their writings, not just me.
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 6:57 AM"Also when a planet becomes the lord of a good and an evil house, its effect will be determined by its Moolatrikonna sign."
"This is not correct according to BPHS. This is a common opinion though, generally borne out of something that "sounds good'. "
I know that the school of Jyotish called System of Approach ( Choudhry, India) does emphasize the use of Moolatrikona signs but that has nothing to do with choosing a good house over an "evil" one, it has to do with determining the primary ruler of a given house.
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:03 AM"it has to do with determining the primary ruler of a given house."
The point is there is no "primary ruler" based on signs - at least not in BPHS.
It is based on houses and there is a chapter in BPHS to tell you how to determine that. And those rules work for that as they work for other things. There is a lot of wisdom that is passed over because of not reading that Chapter and integrating its teachings.
Libra is not "Stronger" or Primary over Taurus for example. But the 6th house is dominant to the first - so for a libra lagna, (for instance) taurus - the 6th house is the dominant one.
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:21 AM
"The point is there is no "primary ruler" based on signs - at least not in BPHS. "
All I'm saying is that there are different ways to look at these things out there, as you know yourself. I am not going against BPHS or anything actually and anyways you are much more knowledgeable than me. ( my 3rd house speaking here, I'm testing what I learn...:) )
System of Approach is just a system, and some people are using it - as I studied it a bit and as some people on the forum have been using it in their contribution, I was referring to it also.
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:56 AM"All I'm saying is that there are different ways to look at these things out there, "
i know Attika,, that is why i have said (in every post in this thread ) "in BPHS" - because that is what is also being discussed here and the rules from the specific chapter that is quoted also has the more detailed rules that are usually overlooked.
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 12:57 AMAttika, David, thank you for your responses.. I was advised by an astrologer that I need to wear a pearl but the doubts crept in when my mother reminded me that it is the lord of the eighth house. I guess some of the confusion continues here as well. Funnily enough, I got married in this period- the marriage was traumatic and was ended in separation during Saturn's stay in my 8th house. Though saturn moved into my 9th house sometime last july/august, my depression from the events transpired is leaving me but slowly. The period has been a period of turmoil and transformation- even spiritual growth. Hope this helps..
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 10:20 AMHi again...this post is of interest to me also since I have Sag lagna in purvashada as well as moon and jupiter in 1st. I have never heard that my moon is in detriment in any way even though I have mars and saturn in 8th. I do deal with a lot of 8th house issues, if I understand the 8th hourse meaning. Isn't there something (can't remember the name) maybe a moksha yoga or some meditative aspect or something that balances. I relate well to the symbol of the Firebird.
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 3:41 PMthanks for sharing. since you're studying astrology yourself you'll probably develop your own thoughts about it. It's always difficult to get people to agree on wearing or not wearing a gem, I've noticed. As a Sag i remember wearing the Moon's gem at a really difficult time in my life - not knowing then - I don't know if it did have an impact or not, but it surely got better when i stopped wearing it.
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 7:02 PMI have heard that for a Sag lagna it is good to wear a yellow sapphire (if one can afford it) or a yellow topaz, especially on thursdays and on the index finger. Also, it is supposedly good to wear a gem of a debilitated planet, especially on it's day. For instance, since I have a weak mars, I was told to wear a red coral always or at least on tuesdays.
My last comments were more for Durgaputra and deciding to wear the Moon's gems or not....
Yes wearing Jupiter's gem as a Sag to strengthen it if it's not very strong is a good idea. Each planet has many gems though. They needn't be expensive also. Should make sure that the actual gem touches the skin.
"it is supposedly good to wear a gem of a debilitated planet, especially on it's day. "
It depends on the planet, really.... Can also accelerate the results of what DB represents for that planet.
"since I have a weak mars, I was told to wear a red coral always or at least on tuesdays."
Yes Mars is a positive planet for Sag but you'd have to go by what aspects/conjunction this Mars affects - Mars is a malefic after all.
In my case, for example, Mars is with Venus and Jupiter - strengthening it also affects these planets, makes them suffer also...
Gems are again a big subject of controversy :)
Unsu...Mon, March 24, 2008 - 10:38 AMErnst Wilhelm has a very interesting class on gem therapy that can be purchased in mp3 or tape cassette format. He has taken the graha sutras and applied the nature of the planets to modern gemology. Basically, each planet rules a different crystal structure, and each sign rules a different color. So gems strengthen a planet in a sign. The Sun rules the cubic crystal structure and Cancer rules pink, so a pink garnet strengthens Sun in Cancer, for example. He says you can basically wear any gem for any planet and while the wrong gem might not do anything for you, it won't hurt you (unless you are actually allergic to the gem material). It's his opinion that a lot of superstition has crept into modern astrologers' understanding of gem prescription.
So yes, there's lots of different opinions out there about gem therapy!
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 10:46 AMThat sounds quite interesting the association of signs & planets rather than houses & planets ! Thanks for the input.
Personally I believe in "behaviour therapy" and "colour-therapy" to honour the planets rather than gem-therapy to pacify the planets.
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 11:39 AM"behaviour therapy" and "colour-therapy
I would agree with that. Never have put much credence into the gems but am well aware of color affects myself, others and the environment. However I found an interesting article about physics and light which explained how and why the color of the gems affect the body. I will see if I can find it if you are interested.
Supposedly, the actual color/vibration that comes off of the gems are not actually the same colors as the actual gem. For instance, yellow sapphire emits a blue light. Now, I just have to remember where the heck I just read about it.
Unsu...Tue, March 25, 2008 - 4:16 AMAccording to Ernst, the signs are colors not the planets. He has taken different sources which disagree on some points, and come up with the following:
Aries - Red
Taurus - White
Gemini - Blue
Cancer - Pink
Leo - Yellow
Virgo - Scintillating
Libra - Green
Scorpio - Brown
Sagittarius - Orange
Capricorn - Variegated
Aquarius - Violet
Pisces - Clear
Notice the fire and air signs are the pure colors, as light is a quality of fire and air. All the fire signs are the warm colors and all the air signs are the cool colors, and complimentary colors are opposite each other. The earth signs are different mixtures of all colors (white light contains all colors). The water signs are pink, brown, and clear. Pink is white with a little color taken away (or added, depending how you look at it), while brown is the reverse. So the water signs are not so much colors in themselves but a relationship to color or a way to perceive color. Pisces, the last sign in the zodiac, is clear (no color) - which is the color of water!
Wearing a gem of the appropriate color will strengthen that sign in all of the vargas. What planet it strengthens depends on the crystal structure.
Sat, March 29, 2008 - 3:02 PMThanks for the input David. Very interesting. A new approach to me.
How does it work?
Should one try to strengthen the signs that need developing like a sign opposite a stellium?
Or the signs that are part of the imbalance of an element, i.e if no air to try and strengthen the air signs that way?
Or the signs the nodes are in?
Any consideration towards difficult houses - does one not cover 6, 8, 12 houses for example?
Should one go by, needs to strengthen the area of relationships or the area of work for example and go for the colours appropriate for the signs that rule these houses?
Unsu...Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:21 PMAnna,
Sorry I've been away from Tribe.
You can wear a gem for any planetary position that you have in any varga, although Ernst recommends not wearing a gem for the 6th, 8th, or 12th position from a planet's position in the rasi chart, at least not on a long-term basis. Also, you can wear any gem to produce a desired effect, even if it's not a planetary position you have in your chart. For example, if you want to grow your business, you could wear the gem for the lord of your 11th house in the sign of your 10th house, even if that combination is not really present in your chart. Ernst uses gems mostly for health concerns, so he prescribes them for the trimsamsa chart mostly, which is related to Mars and specifically responsive to gem therapy. But without even knowing the chart you can use gems to treat certain conditions if you understand the meaning of the planets and signs in the body. Wearing the right color gem for the sign that corresponds with the afflicted area of the body, for example, is one way to go. Also, he says a good place to start is to wear the gem for the combination of each important karaka in the first eight vargas (Sun in rasi, Moon in hora, Mars in drekkana, Mercury in chaturthamsa, etc.). And of course, you want to focus on the current dasa lords, as well as the planet ruling the natural age of life you are in (ie: Jupiter rules 32-50 years of age).
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 9:13 PMNamaskar everyone,
When we speak about GEMS, we must also analyse the position of the planet from AL,as said in the above post that generally gems of du-sthans[6,8,12] are to be avoided as they strengthening the planet who owns du-sthans in the horoscope can increase negativity and create problems in different area of life.Howver, if there is a rajyog formation in the same du-sthanas from AL -wouldnt the gem help the cause. Please give a thought to this.
When we speak of pearl and MOON-- please have a look at the MOON from AL..Karaka is like GOD and thus the significator of AL is moon.Hence its position from AL has to be judged before wearing the pearl.Just few thoughts on this .Hope this helps.Comments appreciated.Have a nice day :)
Unsu...Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:07 AMActually what I meant was not to wear a gem for the planet's position in 6th, 8th, or 12th sign from its rasi sign. For example, I have Mars in Leo in my rasi, so I shouldn't wear a gem for Mars in Cancer, Mars in Capricorn, or Mars in Pisces - at least not long term. But this is from a very different system of gem prescriptions developed by Ernst Wilhelm. He has departed from the conventional wisdom of Vedic gem therapies.
There is nothing wrong with strengthening the lords of dusthanas. We need good healthy dusthana lords in order to survive the things indicated by the dusthana houses. All the houses are important. It's just that planets do better in some houses than others, and when a dusthana lord is bad its effects are more traumatic.
Pearls are a mixture of hexagonal and orthohombric crystal structure, which makes them strengthening to both Mars and Venus at the same time. What sign the pearl strengthens depends on its color. White pearls strengthen Taurus, blue pearls strengthen Gemini, pink pearls strengthen Cancer, etc.
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:47 AMHere is an indepth writting on gemology and I do agree to the logic of the observations. ( Though I do not believe that gems can realy change the fate or destiny ). But they do tend to have effect on the mental makeup of the individual. This is an article collected from net.
GEMS IN ASTROLOGY
As you all know that gems are being used extensively for remedial purposes and moreover it is used to cure various kinds of health problems which fall under the part of the term “Medical Astrology”. In this present age, there are various kinds of diseases in human body being it mental or physical, human mind is stressed with this kind of diseases. But certain things can be understood much before if the birth chart of the concerned person is thoroughly read by any astrologer. But I don’t mean to say that human race by wearing those gems beforehand will not have to face the diseases but I mean to say that the problems will not go to much higher stage and one person will not have to feel many problems after wearing the gems. Shree Ramakrishna Parahamsa said that as you have to pay your taxes if you earn, the same is for human body, but the taxes in the form “diseases”.
To write this article I have taken help of the book “Gems in Vedic Astrology” by Neeraj Lalwani. I have given certain conditions when and whom to give gems and some results after wearing the gems. In the next part I have written about Medical Astrology.
I hope that this work will help the devotees of Astrology and learner’s can learn from it.
Prescription of Gems: When and Whom?
The gems are mainly given according to the Yogakaraks for each Lagna.
The yogakarak for Dhanu lagna will not be the same for Tula Lagna. So, it differs widely according to the Lagna. Not only that, we have to ascertain the enmity between Lord of the Lagna of the native and the gem’s lord. Planetary position also comes to the point while recommending any gem to a native. There are primarily nine gems in our Hindu Astrology which are known as “NavRatna” or nine jewels. They are:-
i. Yellow Sapphire or Pukhraj
iii. Red Coral or Moonga
iv. Pearl or Mukta
v. Diamond or Heera
vi. Emerald or Panna
vii. Blue Sapphire or Neelam
viii. Hessonite or Gomedh
ix. Cat’s eye
The rulers of these gems are:-Jupiter, Sun, Mars, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu respectively. However, there are many substitutes for these original gems. But we recommend original as they have full potential to strengthen the planet for which it is recommended. There are certain rules on which finger to wear and on which day of the weak and whether it is to be set in gold ring or silver ring. We are just giving general conditions below against each gem, results and finally the suitability of each gem for each Lagna.
Yellow Sapphire or Pukhraj is given to pacify or reduce the malefic nature of Jupiter or to strengthen Jupiter. This gem is one of the most expensive gem and finally given for those female who are not getting married or for education of students. We are giving some general conditions which should be considered.
The general conditions for recommending Yellow Sapphire: -
(I)For Meen or Dhanu Lagna,
(II)Jupiter being a benefic is posted in 6/8/12 houses from Lagna,
(III)Jupiter being a benefic is posted in Capricorn (Makara),
(IV)Jupiter being a benefic is placed in 6 & 8 houses from its own house and / or afflicted by Saturn,
(V)Jupiter being 2nd Lord in 9th place or being 4th Lord in 11th place or 7th lord in 2nd house or as 9th lord in 4th house or being 10th lord in 5th house,
(VI)Retrograde Jupiter who is benefic in chart is placed in Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces (where it has no benefic strength).
These are the combinations for recommending Yellow Sapphire or Pukhraj. Now we are giving below the suitability of Yellow Sapphire for each Lagna:-
1. Aries –Yellow sapphire is an auspicious gem for ascendants of Aries, Jupiter being 9th &12th Lord. Moreover, Jupiter will lead the native to the top if he is in 4th from Lagna, if Yellow Sapphire is in its period.
2. Taurus –Jupiter is the lord of 8th &11th house. So it is not auspicious.
3. Gemini –Jupiter suffers from Kendradhipati Dosha. Jupiter in 5th house can confer great yoga if Pukhraj is used. Jupiter in 1/2/4/7/9/10 houses from Lagna with the use of Pukhraj promote professional life.
4. Cancer –Jupiter being the lord of Bhagya is auspicious and for people of this Lagna, Yellow Sapphire is highly recommended.
5. Leo –Use of Pukhraj during the Dasa of Jupiter if Jupiter is afflicted or ill-disposed.
6. Virgo –Jupiter suffers from Kendradhipati Dosha. Jupiter’s placement in star of Venus makes a yogakarak. If Jupiter in 1/2/4/5/7/11 houses from Lagna, one may wear a Pukhraj.
7. Libra –Not auspicious, but if Jupiter posted in Cancer or own house & during the Mahadasa of Jupiter.
8. Scorpio –It’s Auspicious. Jupiter’s placement in Leo or Cancer is good.
9. Sagittarius –Jupiter becomes the Lagna Lord and 4th Lord. Placement in the star of Sun, Mercury or Jupiter makes a yogakarak.

Unsu...Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:27 AMPractice the beeja mantra for moom: Om Shram Shreem Shroum Sah Somaya Namah (note that in Shram Shreem Shroum, 'm' should not be pronounced fully). Beeja mantras directly work on a body's energy centers while at the same time changing the external energy flows.
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 4:16 PMI completely agree with Attika here, not just because I love her to bits :) the reason being is that in August 2007 I decided to wear a ring with blue sapphire in it. My life took the most horrendous turn in which it fell to pieces bit by bit leaving me a torn person. In the space of a couple of months I was homeless, jobless, assaulted and slandered. It was one of the worst times of my life. Saturn in my chart is in the 10th house and debilitated in Leo. My advice is if you are not 100% sure of the effects of a gemstone do NOT wear it. Because to wear one that is unsuitable could destruct your life and put you in a lot of danger.
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 6:56 PMMermaid,
what I do currently (after reading all the responses) is to chant the mantra for each of the navagrahas on their day. As a spiritual aspirant, I need to align with them as well as need their help in my practice and life in general.
Intrestingly, the Devi Mahatmyam/Durga Saptashati says the following:
"Rishis and Munis get their siddhis (attainments) from tapasya
Gods get their siddhis from drinking the nectar of devotion
Asuras get their siddhis from wearing stones and amulets"
So without offense to those who wear gems( even I may do so) tapasya is considered the highest form. Mantra japa would be part of it.
